A longtime Bluffton town resident, the late Mary O. Merrick, was inducted into the town's Wall of Honor in April for her work in both land preservation and protecting the Lowcountry's natural resources. Merrick, who died in February 2014, was known in the community as a "fierce defender of our region's natural resources." She grew up on her family's farm, known as the Calhoun Plantation or the Pinckney Colony, which is located in the greater Bluffton area. "Her childhood living on a farm, adjacent to the Colleton River, is where and why she developed a keen awareness of nature, its inherent beauty and the effects human actions have on the water and land surrounding her," said the town of Bluffton media release concerning the induction.
